  1. A quick clarification for the video of miscue analysis...
In the assignment packet on page 25, it states to listen to the tape and do a full coding of the reading. After reading that I am assuming that I will not be doing a miscue marking while the child is reading to me. Is that correct? I will be observing their body language and patterns as a reader?
    Thanks,

    1. Kim,

This is a good question. You are to do both as best you can if it is possible. Yes, please document all behaviors that you are noticing during and after the reading; however, that does not mean that you cannot be coding during the reading. Why it is stated this way is that it is nearly impossible to catch all miscues during the reading, so you record the reader to catch what you missed. Also, if you notice that this is making your reader nervous or anxious by miscuing while they are reading you can simply stop and just listen to them. If this is the case I would take a few minutes immediately after the reading and retelling to jot down as many notes as you can while they are still fresh in your mind.

  2. Another question for the miscue assignment.
Can the reader use the text when they do their free retell?
    Thanks,

  3. During the unaided retell take the book from them. Just have them retell as best they can without anything (unaided). After the unaided retell you and the child can use the text to help. Do you remember in my example with the Sarah And the "Maggie". I pointed back at different places in the text.
